I'm Published! - Letters to a Young Generation 2
Earlier this year I was asked to contribute to a book that was specifically for black girls. In a world where one definition of beauty is pushed as the only definition of beauty it can be challenging for girls of colour to find their way to success. This book aims to support these girls and give them practical advice and tips on how to be their best and achieve success. Amanda Wilson owner of 910 Publishing had already successfully published Letters to Young Generation which was written by successful black men for black boys and this time she wanted to do something for the girls. Not only is Amanda the founder of this publishing house but she is also a Deputy Head Teacher at a Primary School on London. She works at the coal face seeing the challenges that black students face on a day to day basis. She approached Kanya King founder of the MOBO awards to write the forward for the book and it has grown from there.
I was asked to write a letter along with a number of successful women who had words of wisdom to share. Contributors included MOBO award winner Ms Dynamite, singer Sinitta, Annmarie Lewis, the first black female prison officer at Feltham Young Offenders Institute, National Ambassador for Domestic Violence Jenni Steele, TV presenter Leah Charles-King along with many more.
So I thought about what I have said over the years to my two teenage daughters and put pen to paper. Surprisingly, this was incredibly easy for me to write, for no other reason than, as I thought of my daughters I realised that I wanted to inspire a generation to achieve more and live their best lives. This is my purpose in life to empower others to embrace their magnificence.
The book has been taken up by mainstream newspapers and was featured this weekend in The Guardian online. I am incredibly proud and humbled to be involved in this project as I know that the words that all of us as contributors have penned will be a massive source of inspiration to teenage girls around the world. I’m also excited about the positive impact this will have on those who read it and hope that it helps to make the difference I know that Amanda planned for it to have on our world.
This experience has encouraged me to get writing my own book so watch this space.
